A few friends and I burned an American flag in my grandparents' backyard. I was watching myself do this. It had the reverence of a flag-burning ceremony, which is done when a flag is too beat up to fly, but it was celebratory and fun like a group of witches dancing around a bonfire. We each held onto the corners or the edges of the flag, setting it alight from its sagging middle, but our fingers weren't burned.
